Work, site, plant - three definitions you need to know

Construction contracts contain several essential definitions, with three of the most prevalent and occasionally confused being; work, site, and plant.

Work, site, and plant are terms used throughout the general conditions of the contract to define the contractor's scope of work, the location of the work, and the materials that will be supplied to the site.

Each of these definitions has particular importance in the context of the contract.

So, are you your client, contractor, or employer on the same page regarding definition within the contract?

Work

Work defines the specific tasks the contractor is responsible for completing, including all activities and materials required to complete the project.

Site

Site refers to the specific location of the work and includes the site boundaries and any restrictions on access to the site.

Plant

Plant refers to the machinery, equipment, or other items the contractor will supply to the site to complete the work.

Understanding these definitions in the context of your contract is essential to avoid misunderstandings and complications during the project's execution.

Misunderstanding these terms could lead to project delays, additional costs, and even litigation therefore contractors must read through the defined terms carefully.
